The highly energy intensive metallurgical industry and fossil fuel-based methanol production processes account for over 35% of the overall worldwide industrial CO2 emissions. Efficient Methanol from Pumped Heat and Calcium Looping (EMPHATICAL) targets residual CO/CO2 containing gases from the metallurgical industry for processing through the energy efficient integration of innovative oxy-blown calcium-looping capture technology, purification and conversion of CO2 to e-methanol with green H2 as a feedstock. This culminates in a first of a kind TRL7 demonstrator for establishing the economic viability and sustainability of the integrated process capable of achieving net zero for the metallurgical and methanol production industries.
